Lightning arresters are used as a protective device which conducts the high voltage surge on the electricity machine to the ground to avoid the damage. The lightning arresters are used to protect the electrical fences. Lightning arresters used in electric substations are big devices, such as a porcelain tube several feet long and also several inches in diameter, commonly filled with discs of zinc oxide. A safety port at the side of the tool vents the occasional internal explosion without shattering the porcelain cylinder.
On the basis of class, lightning arresters are classified into different types:
1. Station Class: Station Class arresters are designed to protect the electrical equipment above 20 mVA range. This type of lightning arrester is used in power stations and substations, high voltage structures or areas.
2. Intermediate Class: This type is used to protect electrical equipment which ranges from 1 to 20 mVA. Intermediate Class is used in medium voltage equipment areas such as electric utility station,
3. Distribution Class: These arresters are found on the equipment that is rated 1000 kVA or less. A distribution class is found on transformers.
4. Secondary Class: Unlike other types, the secondary class provides the least amount of protection to electrical equipment and is designed to protect electric appliances most of the homes and offices.
